Major Hazardous Facilities.

Major Hazard facilities

Oil refineries, chemical plants and large fuel and chemical storage sites where large quantities of hazardous materials are stored, handled or processed are considered by authorities to be Major Hazard Facilities (MHFs).

MHFs are one of seven priority hazard areas for which Environics maintains advisory  material to help companies comply with legislation.

The national documents for the Control of Major Hazard Facilities can be found at:

Control of Major Hazard Facilities – National Standard [NOHSC:1014(2002)]; and National Code of Practice [NOHSC:2016 (1996)].

The objectives of these documents are to prevent major accidents and near misses and to minimise the effects of any major accidents and near misses.

Who to contact about the regulation of MHFs

Each jurisdiction has its own regulations for major hazard facilities and you should direct your inquiries to the relevant jurisdictional authority.

Harmonised workplace health and safety regulations,1st June 2012:

With the introduction of the new harmonised Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulation, Environics has created Health and Safety compliance protocols for the affected states and territories listed below.

• New South Wales
• Queensland
• Australian Capital Territory
• Northern Territory

The process of developing protocols in line with the WHS Regulation has led to the creation of both new protocols and questions. The current state and territory based protocols will cease to exist for affected regions and your company will be required to resubmit written safety programs to ensure conformance with the new requirements. Please note, any previously approved exemptions for current state and territory protocols will expire due to the change in requirements.
